LED Products Suppliers in China: The Complete Guide

The LED products sector in China is very large, and the market is incredibly busy. Small garage operators try to compete with manufacturers who employ thousands of workers on their seemingly endless assembly lines. That said, most manufacturers of LED items are somewhere in between the two situations I just described.

LED Products Suppliers in China: Finding the right LED manufacturer in China takes a little longer than it would take to search quickly on Alibaba.com. The stakes are high, and if you choose the wrong manufacturer, you seriously run the risk of losing your entire investment. In this article, we will explain what really matters when recruiting suppliers of LED products in China and other Asian countries.

LED Product Suppliers: Why You Should Avoid Chinese LED Product Wholesalers

Before I start explaining the inner workings behind choosing the right manufacturer of LED products, I need to clarify why turning to a wholesaler that sells these products is not the right way, at least not for buyers in Europe or the United States.

For many small European businesses, the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) set by Chinese suppliers is too high. In fact, many Chinese suppliers set the Minimum Order Quantity between 500 and 1000 units for each product. Since most importing companies want to offer more than one or two products, the total Minimum Order Quantity equals thousands of units. What is the solution? Buying small quantities of products from Chinese wholesalers who trade in LED products (buying them from manufacturing companies and acting as middlemen).

But it’s not that simple. European and American importers are legally required to ensure that their products comply with all applicable regulations (e.g., the Ecodesign Directive or the RoHS Directive). Importing non-compliant LED lighting products is illegal and may result in the seizure of the goods, or refusal of entry by customs authorities.

But how does this relate to Chinese wholesalers of LED products?

Here’s the answer: the vast majority of Chinese wholesalers of LED lighting products sell items intended for the Chinese domestic market. Since there is a cost to ensure compliance with strict Western regulations, LED products made for the Chinese market do not comply with European regulations, so their import and sale are illegal. Ensuring compliance with current regulations is not the responsibility of the Chinese supplier. It is the sole responsibility of the importer. You therefore need a manufacturing company that produces products according to European standards.

LED Products Suppliers in China: Important Factors in Choosing

Not all LED product suppliers in China are all created equal. There are thousands of suppliers ranging from small merchants who sell on the stalls, to large manufacturers who make tens of thousands of units daily. Most providers are in the middle, although a majority of them are closer to the lower end of this range.

But, since you’re sitting in your home or office browsing to search for suppliers on Alibaba, it’s not that easy to determine which LED product suppliers are reliable and which are the lesser merchants. The type of supplier you choose is crucial. Selecting the wrong one could be disastrous for your business. Read on and I’ll explain what you need to look for to select suitable suppliers.

1. LED Product Suppliers in China: Compliance with European Electronics Regulations

As already mentioned in this article, ensuring that items comply with all current electrical safety regulations (e.g., the Low Voltage Directive) is crucial. However, it is certainly not safe to assume that all manufacturers are compliant, even the percentage of compliant manufacturing companies is much higher than that of wholesalers.

Most Chinese LED product suppliers are unable, or unwilling, to make LED products that comply with foreign regulations. Therefore, it is crucial to get confirmation that suppliers have a proven track record when importing LED lights from China.

However, compliance is not always black and white. Even if a supplier has a proven track record of regulatory compliance, you can’t assume that all of their products are compliant. Most LED product suppliers cannot show you compliance documentation (e.g., a certificate of conformity) for more than a portion of the models they offer. For this reason, you not only need to check the supplier’s prior compliance documentation, but you also need to check which products are compliant.

However, you must assume that you already know the directives and/or regulations to be applied. If not, it is better that you get support from a professional to confirm all the regulations and directives in force in Italy.

2. LED Products Suppliers in China: Quality Management System

Production is not a science. Considering that even multinationals like Toyota run into serious quality issues, you can safely assume that Chinese suppliers are no better. Rather, it is the opposite. When you buy products from China, quality-related issues will certainly come up as you go. The question is whether the number of defective units is limited to a small part of the order, or is enough to ruin the entire game. In most cases, the defect rate lies somewhere in between.

This also occurs when applying a Quality Management System (QMS, e.g. ISO 9001:2008). The purpose of this system is to monitor the quality of the products in all the various stages of production. Generally, this includes, but may not be limited to, the following:

  1. New materials and component inspection (e.g., LED IC testing)
  2. Conducting tests during production (e.g., functional testing and differentiation of defective units)
  3. Conducting post-production testing (e.g., aging tests)

Most of the suppliers of LED products in China are not certified according to any Quality Management System. Although a supplier can still implement a Quality Management System without being officially certified, my experience tells me that this is very rare (even if quality checks are carried out). Applying a Quality Management System is crucial in the production of electronic components, since defects are not visible to the naked eye. Without a Quality Management System, defects can easily multiply and ruin an entire batch of products. This is why I believe that the Quality Management System is the second most important factor when choosing a manufacturer of LED products in China.

3. LED Products Suppliers in China: Components

LED product suppliers in China provide the outermost part of the industry. They do not produce components. Instead, they purchase components from domestic and foreign suppliers such as CREE, Nichia LED, and Silan LED.

Depending on the use, your quality requirements, and the price range, you need to decide which LED components (e.g., chips) to look for before you start contacting manufacturers. While some suppliers primarily use high-quality components from Japan, others exclusively use components made in China.

4. LED Products Suppliers in China: Company Size

Size matters in the manufacturing sector, particularly in China’s electronics industry. At the bottom of the range are the middlemen. Some of them carry out their business from their living room, or from a small shop. After reading this article, you know much more about the import mechanism of LED product suppliers in China. In other words, they have no idea what the European or American product regulations are.

What you need is an organized manufacturer, with prior compliance and a Quality Management System. These factors very often correspond to the scale of activity of suppliers: Medium to large manufacturers are often more reliable than smaller ones.

There are two ways to assess the scale of activity of Chinese manufacturers. You can jump on a plane and check out their manufacturing facilities yourself. But an alternative is to take a look at the registered capital of suppliers, specified in their business licenses, which is a document that all legally registered enterprises in China have. A small registered capital (e.g., less than RMB 5,000,000) for this type of product indicates that the supplier is a small company, or even a merchant.

5. LED Products Suppliers in China: Minimum Order Quantity

There’s a reason why I put this point at the bottom of the list. Many importers select LED product suppliers in China based primarily on their Minimum Order Quantity requirement. This is only reasonable if the supplier meets the other four requirements outlined in this guide. A reduced Minimum Order Quantity requirement is completely irrelevant if the supplier is not able to produce LED products that comply with all applicable regulations in Italy and applies the Quality Management System.
