China has turned into an increasingly advanced production hub. While multinationals in certain industries may want to consider other industries, China (and Guangdong province in particular) has never been more attractive to e-commerce companies and hardware start-ups.

Product Specifications: “Who is the product outsider?”

In this “gold rush”, the doors are basically open to everyone, including outsiders: i.e. all companies or individuals without any previous experience in the sector. Think of bankers becoming sportswear designers. Outsiders hardly know the definition of “quality” of their products and, at the same time, tend to believe that the supplier must guarantee a certain quality standard that is perhaps imaginary and undefined.

This thing couldn’t be more wrong. Knowing what defines the quality of your product is key to avoiding quality issues in the first place. In my experience, the lack of clear specifications is, by far, the most common reason that leads to the occurrence of serious quality problems, compared to, for example, the deliberate use of substandard components and an intentional reduction in quality.

To help you prevent this from happening, we explain how you can locate all the technical specifications relevant to your product, using the technical data sheets on Alibaba.com and Amazon. We’ve also explained how, in turn, you can use the datasheet to identify the various quality and customization options for the product. But, first, let’s summarize why a data sheet stands where each product begins and ends.

Why is it important to identify product specifications and quality options?

In contract manufacturing, it is not the supplier’s responsibility to define and guarantee quality. For those with a background in engineering or industry, this is quite obvious. Conversely, industry outsiders often lack the technical knowledge of the product they want to develop, so they need to learn how to define product quality from scratch. Quality, in turn, is defined by the data sheet.

Therefore, the first step to take is to identify all the relevant specifications and let the manufacturer respond to each of these specifications. Don’t assume that the supplier will communicate all relevant specifications, as they may have reasons not to disclose certain aspects, or simply because they do not know them. By leaving it to the supplier to “fill in the gaps”, you expose your business to the risk of serious quality problems resulting from misunderstandings, or the use of poor quality components
